COVID and the 21/22 Season

Masks:
At Silverton Mountain you will be required to wear a mask in a few settings.  Heli skiing requires a double layer mask system. We will provide a surgical mask to be worn under your personal face mask for a two layer protection system.

In order to enter the base tent you will also need to wear a mask.

Illness
If you are feeling ill, or have any cold/flu symptoms we ask you to stay home.  Our COVID policy is to not allow employees or guests participate if they exhibit any cold/flu symptoms. Of course if you are COVID positive but symptom free, you also need to refrain from coming to Silverton.

Waivers
We are using Smartwaiver online system so that all participants can have a touchless check in process. Your confirmation email with the Smartwaiver link needs to be shared with everyone in your party in advance to ensure that these are completed no later than 4pm the day prior to your reservation.

Bus
The shuttles will continue to operate at reduced capacity.   We are asking that guests move to the back of the bus to keep separation from the guides working forward.

Alcohol
Initially we will not be serving alcohol at the mountain this season during scheduled ski dates. We highly encourage groups looking for après to head to town and visit one of the many restaurants and breweries who are eager to hear about your epic day at the mountain.

We are still able to offer a delicious lunch and have pre- packaged snacks and bottled non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Please consider ordering your lunch online ahead of time when you book your tickets, or at check-in when you pick up your ticket for the day. We still do not have running water, so please bring a full water bottle to start the day, and either plan on buying water or have a backup bottle in your vehicle.

Rentals
In order to streamline your check-in process, please reserve all of your equipment needs ahead of time.   If you are renting gear, plan on arriving for check in on the early side, so there is time to get you the equipment.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

BIG Early September Snow Storm in Silverton, CO!

First ski turns of the season September 9th, 2020 after a early winter storm nails Colorado.

September 9, 2020…. At Silverton Mountain snow is always possible any time of year with peaks as high as 13,500’, but fresh powder feels extra special in September!  The Silverton Ski Patrol was out “inspecting” the snow conditions after a large winter storm dropped plenty of deep powder on the slopes.  Fresh powder turns and smiles were in abundance as the ski patrol made the first ski turns of the 2020-21.

After a premature ending to last ski season due to covid, skiers and snowboarders are extra eager to open the 2020-21 ski season.  Silverton Mountain is optimistic for an early opening for 2020-21.  This isn’t the first time Silverton Mountain has received large early snow, with powder falling as early as August in previous years.  It looks like 2020-21 is off to a great start!

Confessions from a backcountry skier: I like to ride the heli!

Silence. Snow softly falling dampens the sound of the forest, save the slight squeaking of my boots and old bindings as my skis plow slowly uphill through a foot of fresh powder. The uphill struggle is a huge part of why I love earning my turns backcountry skiing. Are the turns actually better when you earn them? Some may argue that they, indeed, are. In the past, I have considered myself one of those people.

Snow flies as the heli takes off from the ridge top, as we get higher the views open up and I am granted a birds eye view of the incredible terrain that I usually see from the ground. WOAH, I’ve never even noticed that that line goes! And the snow looks DEEP across the valley. I wouldn’t normally have considered these lines on a day like today. In the backcountry, the avalanche danger is rated as Considerable above and near treeline. I certainly wouldn’t have ventured out into steep, tight couloirs with this much fresh snow.

When the heli leaves us on the exposed ridge it’s a bit of a shock. I’m not used to just being dropped into exposure. It’s a different feeling than spending the whole morning working into more and more exposed terrain. My heart is definitely pumping. Wait, I can hear my heart beating? It’s totally silent now, just like the backcountry. Quietly, our guide tells us about the season-long avalanche mitigation work they have been doing on these chutes. From skier compaction and explosives, they don’t rate the risk at considerable here. You mean I get to ski THAT, TODAY?

We ski one at a time. Leaving fresh powder for the others in our group. Dropping into the steep powder I recognize that the snow feels more stable. My guide is watching from a cut out in the couloir, should something go wrong I know he has my back. Nothing goes wrong though. Each turn throws snow over my shoulder and into my face. My hair is collecting snow. If I had a beard, it would certainly be plastered in white. I get to the bottom of the line to my new friends whooping and hollering. It’s epic today. We ski the rest of the way down to the helicopter together. Already tired and satisfied. But it’s time to load back up for 5 more runs, it’s only getting better.

By the end of the day, my legs are somehow burning even more than a typical day in the backcountry. I have some new friends to grab an après drink with in the tent, and I’ve taken 5x more turns than I typically have time and energy for.

I’ll never stop loving earning my turns, but I am definitely a Heli Ski convert. 100% worth it at least one day a season. 11/10 would do again.
